The Yucaipa Calimesa Joint Unified School District (YCJUSD) and Yucaipa Adult School marked an important milestone on Aug. 6, with the official opening of the adult schoolβs new program designed to empower adults with disabilities. Though the adult school has roots dating back to the 1960s, an establishment at a new location in 2017 has opened up a world of opportunities for a community in need.
During the opening night, students, families and staff were treated to a tour of the campus, showcasing five classrooms that will serve the new program.
YAS Principal Dana Carter emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive environment for adult learners.
βWhen I became the principal of the adult school about eight years ago, one of the programs that adult schools are supposed to serve is for adults with disabilities,β Carter said.
The conversation to establish the program began with the simple question of why adults with disabilities didnβt have access to similar opportunities at the adult school. While the program was previously located at Yucaipa High School, it is now housed in its current facility.
βAs time changes and changes occur, we are now ready for that move,β Carter said.
βWe believe that adult students belong on an adult campus, and weβre grateful that theyβre here.β
Mark Stafford, one of the teachers, expressed his excitement for the programβs potential.
Fellow teacher Scott Salinas echoed this sentiment, noting the commitment from the district and board.
βIβve been amazed at how much the district and the board have done to give us the resources you guys are going to see tonight,β Salinas said.
YCJUSD Superintendent Cali Binks also attended the celebration, stating the initiative is a significant investment in the future.
βThis is an amazing night. It signifies a new investment in our adults with disabilities and new opportunities,β Binks said.
βThis is a huge investment in the growth, the opportunities, and a brand new facility on one of the oldest schools in the district that looks phenomenal. We have such a talented maintenance and operations team. The money weβve invested is well spent on this program.β
This event not only represents progress for adults with disabilities in the community, but also the districtβs ongoing commitment to inclusivity for all Yucaipa students.
